Lane County STEAMOn!

Lane ESD and 14 local school districts have been awarded an Oregon Department of Education STEM, STEAM and/or CTE Program & Activity Grant to fund Lane County STEAMOn! The project builds off the nationally recognized Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs facilitated by Lane ESD in high schools throughout Lane County.  The grant will facilitate year-long, intensive Project-Based Learning (PBL) for 8th to 12th grade students. The specific CTE areas of concentration will include: Engineering in Construction & Manufacturing (ECM), Information & Communication Technology (ICT), and Health Services. Science, Math, Arts, and Humanities teachers and CTE teachers at participating schools will form interdisciplinary teams, providing flexibility and depth to projects centered industry concerns. By leveraging successful features of the high-quality CTE programs currently implemented, Lane County STEAMOn! will bring technical and employability skills to more students in high demand and high wage careers.

The project aims to include at least one team of teachers (2-3 teachers each) from each of the 14 districts, involving anywhere from 28 to 42 teachers in total. In-depth collaboration between CTE and core subject area teachers is strengthened by the insights and guidance provided by industry professionals throughout the projects and activities. By working in district teams of core and technical teachers, alignment to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), essential skills and the diploma requirements will be reinforced building long-term sustainability, real world projects and activities, and support for student interests.

The objective of increasing CTE engagement in the Lane County STEAM pathways for disadvantaged student groups underpins every goal of the project. To ensure participation of underrepresented and underserved students, Lane ESD will overlap the project with new and ongoing intitiatives and resources, including: Title 1 programs and outreach, the Youth Transition Program (YTP), a new partnership with Lane County National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the CTE Career Pathways revitalization grant, and Lane Community College career pathways.

Lane Early Learning Hub established

Governor Kitzhaber announced the establishment of the state’s first regional Early Learning Hubs. The hubs were designed to use local models to bring together social and educational resources to families to ensure that kids arrive in kindergarten ready to learn. The Lane Early Learning Hub is amongst the first six hubs to be established in the state. The early learning hubs facilitate the opportunity to put students on a path to graduation from birth by preparing children to learn the moment they enter school. When children come to school with important skills such as: knowing their letters, sounds and how to count; and have good listening and following directions skills, they are much more competent as they enter school. This advantage stays with children for years to come, and they are more successful at all future levels of school.

The launch of this initiative helps Lane County get one step closer to achieving 40-40-20 goals for students in Oregon, especially for those from communities of color who haven’t traditionally had access to these kinds of services and supports.The Lane Early Learning Hub is working closely with Connected Lane County.

Teacher and Administrator Mentoring Program

A group of Connected Lane County partners applied for and received $546,000 in funding from the Oregon Department of Education for the Beginning Teacher and Administrator Mentoring Program. The program will have a significant impact on how Lane County school districts support and develop new teachers and administrators. Funds will be used to implement coordination programs that:

  • Provide quality mentoring support;
  • Improve the educational performance of pupils;
  • Improve the leadership performance of new administrators;
  • Enable beginning teachers and administrators to be effective in teaching all pupils including those who are economically, culturally, linguistically, and academically diverse;
  • Improve professional success and retention of new teachers and administrators;
  • Ensure intensive, individualized support and assistance for participating teachers and administrators; and
  • Enable continuous program improvement through monitoring and evaluation.

Regional Achievement Collaborative Pilot Projects

Connected Lane County is one of 11 regional partnerships across the state of Oregon invited to participate in the Regional Achievement Collaborative Pilot. A program of the Oregon Education Investment Board (OEIB), these regional collaboratives will help meet key student outcomes such as getting children ready for kindergarten, creating opportunities for high school students to earn college credit, and ensuring smooth transitions into career and college. Together, regional education partners will transform education and help the state of Oregon meet its 40-40-20 goals of higher attainment for all students by the year 2025.

Connected Lane County was chosen based on the depth of its partnerships, commitment to the success of students from pre-natal to age 22 (P-22), and the potential for implementing innovating and effective projects. The partnership will receive $50,000 for facilitation support through the Oregon Solutions Network. Through the Regional Achievement Collaboratives, Connected Lane County will share best practices and strategies and report on their progress to the Oregon Education investment Board and the Governor.

Because of the depth and breadth of partnerships already developed since educational partners in Lane County partners first came together to work on P-22 issues in 2010, Connected Lane County has been also asked by the OEIB to serve as a mentor and leader to other regions.
